To perform the educational and support functions of the District, a variety of communication devices are available for use including office telephones, fax machines, pagers, cellular phones, and hand held and wireless devices.

The District recognizes that there may occasionally be times when these devices may be used for personal reasons. Such use must be held to a minimum in number and duration and must not interfere with an employee’s work.

1. District use of telephone technology:

Telephone calls for district business shall be as concise as possible. Long distance calls outside the local area code must be approved by an administrator or designee prior to making the call

2. Personal use of telephone and other communication technology:

a) All long distance calls outside the local area codes shall be billed to personal calling cards or calls should be made collect to the party involved. In situations where a call is made and administered properly and the District bears the cost of the call, prompt reimbursement to the District is to be made by the employee.

b) Calls during the student day shall be concise as possible.

c) All incoming personal calls of a non-emergency nature will be placed in the employee’s voice mail.

d) Use of personal cell phones and hand held devices must be held to a minimum and must not interfere with the employee’s work. Cell phones and hand held devices shall be turned off and use shall be limited to non-instructional time, breaks, or lunch time. All calls shall be made before or after the student day, during breaks for non-teaching staff, or during non-duty lunch periods.

If an emergency exists and a staff member needs to be contacted, office personnel shall take the call and provide the employee with the information as soon as practical. The District Administrator, or designee, has the authority and will decide if it is necessary to interrupt a class or work station.

Violations of this policy may result in a verbal or written reprimand and/or suspension without pay.
